El Abanico Sofia (Walnut)

The walnut (dark) or cherry (light) wood used as the fans ribs is sustainable, assuring that no local Philippine trees were cut in the process. The wood is hand shaped, cut and scrolled in the artisanal “callado” or cut out style.

The fabric used is “pina-seda” or pineapple silk, and handwoven by weavers from Iloilo and Palawan. The colors and the weft of the fabrics were bespoke for these unique fans. The fans all have an optional matching shawl.

To secure the covers and wood spokes is a rivet or “rosetta “ made with rhodium plated brass in silver. The abanico is adorned with a loop of rhodium silver, and finished with a silk tassel and fresh water pearl.

This fan is presented in a hand made box of raffia fiber is obtained from the raffia palm tree, native to Madagascar but also grown in the Philippines.
